The Family Meal: Home Cooking with Ferran Adrià
This week we’re going to be cooking our way though a few of the menus in The Family Meal, from Spanish classics like Saffron Risotto with Mushrooms and Catalan-Style Turkey to international crowd pleasers including Cheeseburgers can you believe that they had cheeseburgers before service at elbulli?!? There’s a problem, though: The kids are keen again, not least because this is the second meal served with crisps.
I love the pictures and SEEING what each step involves, and how the ingredients are easily available anywhere, and how also the time it takes to prepare the dish is presented. A surprisingly delicious dish was the Garbanzo Beans with Spinach and Egg; good for a tasty light meal, I’ve tucked away this recipe among my favorites. Another is Potato chip omelet, Pork loin with peppers, coconut macaroons.
Each section is a meal, usually starting with an appetizer, a meal, and a dessert. I totally geeked out at the proportionate changes and having never worked in a pro I’m still technically working my way through this amazing book and I’m not even going to attempt many of the recipes but this book is a 5-star alone for the first 30 pages of information about how El Bulli organized their meal the family meal ferran adria, recipes and menus. One of the best cook books I’ve seen. I suspect this when I read the recipe in The Family Mealhis new cookbook that any fool can have a bash at. And there’s the nub of The Family Meal: Highly recommended and misses the 5th star only marginally for some regional ingredient names such as the fish guide the family meal ferran adria, or minor variants on meat cuts and ease of ingredient procurement.
There are a ton of desserts where only 1 spoon of flour is used – in those cases it won’t make a difference if you’ll use gluten free flour instead. And so to our final meal. How small things should be chopped, what texture sauces should have, how darkly something should be caramelized — all explained.
However, “pork sausage” and “fish” are way to general; I wish he had at least described the type of fish firm, oily, flaky, whatever.

Thanks to the generous folks over at Phaidonwe are giving away five 5 copies of The Family Meal this week. Not just a collection of recipes but also an instruction manual. I am impressed with the book and feel confident that I can really make many of the meals suggested. All in all, this family-style cookbook helped this harried mother-of-a-toddler gain some kitchen confidence.
I assume this is because he is using types that are readily ferrn in Spain but probably not the same in rerran countries I noticed in another Spanish cookbook, The family meal ferran adria that the author had a hard time coming up the family meal ferran adria fish equivalents, especially.
